Introduction

I’m Nicolás Rivera Smith-Palliser, and this is my final report for the WP Credits program. Over the past weeks, I contributed to the Polyglots Team by working on Costa Rican Spanish translations from the plugin Rooster One. This report summarizes what I worked on, what I learned, and how the experience shaped me as a contributor.

Teams and projects I contributed to

I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots team. My focus was reviewing and translating the needed strings for the plugin Rooster One, according to the WP documentation.

Learning resources

I started with the Translator’s Handbook and the official WordPress Credits Course, along with the documentation given by my mentor. All of these resources helped me understand the translation process and how to correctly contribute to the community.

Challenges and solutions

My biggest challenge was learning the right steps that I needed to follow in order to correctly translate strings for the WP Community. Since I was my very first approach with the platform, it was hard. However, by reading all the documentation given to me, I was able to fully understand the process and correctly contribute.

Key learnings from the WP Credits program

One of the main lessons I gained from the WP Credits program is that contributing to open source is not only about completing technical tasks, but also about collaborating with others. I learned the importance of communicating clearly, asking questions when needed, and providing respectful feedback. The program also showed me that documentation and well-written content are essential for helping a large open source community grow and work effectively.

New skills gained

Technical skills: WordPress translation workflow, use of the Polyglots platform, translation review and consistency, localization practices, terminology research, and understanding of open source contribution guidelines.

Soft skills: Clear and respectful communication, attention to detail, time management, collaboration with an international community, openness to feedback, and confidence when asking questions or requesting support.

Personal reflections and next steps

What I enjoyed most about the WP Credits program was the opportunity to contribute to a real open source project and interact with people from different backgrounds. I was surprised by how organized and supportive the WordPress community is, especially when helping new contributors understand the process. After the program, I would like to continue contributing to the Polyglots team, improve my translation and localization skills, and become more confident when participating in the community. In the future, I would also like to help other beginners who are starting their own contribution journey.
